Where the spirits head home
Cape Reinga – Te Rerenga Wairua
Te Rerenga Wairua means in Maori: the leaping-off place of spirits. In Maori belief this is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.
This is also the point where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean leading to interesting water “fights” as one body of water meets the other.
The drive up from Paihia is amazing, taking you through scenery and roads just begging for you to stop at nearly every corner to enjoy the views and take pictures, most of which will not be adequate in sharing the beauty of the place.
Cape Reinga is the end of 90 mile Beach or the beginning if you prefer. A 3 to 4 day walk starts here heading south. It must be an amazing tramp!
