My favourites from the South Island

The Mainland
People living on the South Island call it the mainland, as opposed to that island in the north! About one quarter of New Zealand’s population lives in this part of the country. That’s not many; peace and tranquillity are the key words here. Outside of the Christchurch area, you can drive for miles and not see a car.
The South Island is home to incredible places: Marlborough, one of the bigger wine areas of New Zealand, Kaikoura with its fur seals and sperm whales, Invercargill and the Caitlins range where you can reach the southern most part of mainland New Zealand at Slope Point. Then you start moving up the west coast towards Milford Sounds and its majestic waterways, to Queenstown and Wanaka, on to glacier country and then back up towards Golden Bay with its incredible Pupu Springs and the top of the south.
I preferred the South Island. Not that the north was not beautiful, on the contrary, but for me the south epitomised what I had imagined New Zealand being.
