Hanoi – Living with the train tracks on your front door

Lê Duẩn and Khâm Thin streets in Hanoi’s old quarter
4 to 6 times a day, these 2 streets in Hanoi are the scene for some “interesting” times. Going to or from either the Long Bien Train station or the main Hanoi station, Ga Ha Noi, trains rumble through these streets with just enough space on either side so as to not run into the buildings. Residents make sure their motorbikes and anything else in front of their doors are well away from the tracks. They also make sure that tourists are pinned against the walls, just in case. Even though the trains are not going too fast it would still be impossible for them to stop in time to avoid ramming into someone or something.
Residents have long gotten used to it and love to come and have their wedding photos taken there, tourists are attracted to it (not sure how many have been hurt over the years though), passengers try and avoid having their heads chopped off when passing through!
