U Bein Bridge – Mandalay

The “oldest” teakwood bridge in the world
With its building completed in 1851, U Bein Bridge , is believed to be if not the oldest and longest, but at least one of the oldest and longest teakwood bridges. It allows people to cross over Lake Taungthaman close to Mandalay in Myanmar. From dawn to dusk, locals can be seen walking across. The shallow lake is also home to a number of fishermen who fish mainly on foot.
As you could expect, it is a major tourist attraction in that area and it gets its fair share of photographers and walkers of all kinds. One has to say that the approximately 1000 pillars, most of them still teak, do make for interesting backgrounds and subjects for some great photography!
