Inle Lake – A life above water

The second largest lake in Myanmar
Home to a number of endemic species, Inle Lake provides in addition to the many fish caught there, fruit and vegetables grown on floating gardens. The specificities of the lake and the amount of reeds growing in it has lead to a very particular way of rowing boats: standing at one end of the boat, the fishermen uses one of his legs (only men row like that) to move the oar; quite spectacular to watch, and really physical!
One particularity are the floating gardens. To help “feed” the plants the villagers harvest the reeds and weeds growing in the lake to be used as soil to help grow all the delicious fruit and vegetables that can be found locally.
